Has anyone else noticed lately that when you’re paying the bill in a restaurant by card, the waiter/ess asks you if you’d like to leave a tip instead of just handing the card machine over and letting you decide. It’s happened to me in a fair few places, including one work lunch where the bill was split and each person was asked individually if they’d be leaving a tip for a meal that consisted of four sandwiches. Barber on Exchequer St at it too, €30 for a hair cut and asked for a tip – I thought the usual was to charge €27 and you just say “arra make it €30”. I’ve worked in hospitality so I always leave something, but I really resent being pressured into it.
