Virgin Australia is opening premium, fast-tracked security gates at Melbourne and Brisbane airports as airlines continue to battle it out for passengers post Covid.

The fast-tracked lanes will be reserved for Velocity Frequent Flyer members and Business Class guests.

The new lanes will open between 5am and 10am.

“We know time is important for our most frequent flyers, and our expanded security facilities in Brisbane and Melbourne are a ticket for loyal guests to quickly move through the screening process, so they can spend more time enjoying our lounge experience prior to their flight,” said a Virgin Australia Group spokesperson.

The news comes after Qantas frequent flyers were issued a $50 discount as part of an apology from CEO Alan Joyce following months of delayed flights, cancellations and mishandled baggage.

“Over the past few months, too many of you have had flights delayed, flights cancelled and bags misplaced,” Joyce said.

“There are good reasons why, but when it comes to what you expect from Qantas, it’s not good enough.

“On behalf of the national carrier, I want to apologise and assure you that we’re working hard to get back to our best.”
