Sinkholes form when acidic rainwater seeps through soil and eventually reaches bedrock such as sandstone, chalk or limestone beneath and dissolves it.

Depending on how thick and strong the soil above the void is, it can either hold and sustain the weight of anything above it, or it can give way.

This sinkhole appeared at a US golf course after heavy rains.
