Norway’s national women’s football team has been in unusually good spirits since trouncing Northern Ireland’s in their opening match of the Women’s European Football Championships (EURO 2022). Hopes were high as they prepared to meet England’s team Monday night.

Football commentators have been noting that the women’s team, which earlier has been plagued by strife that led to the withdrawal of star player Ada Hegerberg, got off to a near-perfect start when they beat Northern Ireland by a score of 4-1 late last week. Hegerberg, who plays professionally for Lyon, is back on the team and surrounded by other star football players like Caroline Graham Hansen (Barcelona) and Guro Reiten (Chelsea).

Other players like Julie Blakstad (Manchester City) and Frida Manum (Arsenal) were among those scoring, though, and Norway’s team is functioning well again. Hegerberg made it clear that she’s ready to help take Norway to the finals, is glad she’s settled earlier disputes with coach Martin Sjøgren and is proud to be back playing with the flag on her uniform.

“I’m excited, and I feel the expectation levels, not least for myself,” Hegerberg told reporters. “We all see that there’s lots of attention on us in this championship. Now we need to find the right balance and concentrate while also having fun.” EURO 2022 runs through July 31.
