Victoria Police have arrested a man and charged him with more than 260 offences for dangerous driving and stealing parts off cars across Melbourne’s south-east.

Police allege the 22-year-old was involved in two separate “hoon gender reveals”, a practice which involves a driver doing a burnout to reveal coloured smoke to announce the gender of a unborn child.

One of the gender reveals was for the Rowville man’s own child, police said.

The incidents took place on 10 July and on 5 July 2020 and have been slammed as dangerous by police.

“If you’re celebrating an impending birth and want to reveal the gender of your child, pop a balloon or cut a cake,” Sergeant Paul Holtzinger from Dandenong High Risk Driving Unit.

“Don’t tear up our roads and recklessly put your family and friends in danger of serious injury or death.

“It’s not only bizarre and illegal behaviour but has the real ability to turn a moment of celebration into tragedy.”

Three additional hooning incidents in Dandenong South took place between 28 April and 4 July this year, police say.

Amid the investigation, officers say they became aware of the fact the Rowville man, and three other offenders, were allegedly involved in the theft of vehicle parts.

More than 70 vehicles were damaged, totalling up to $300,000 worth of repairs.

A further three arrests were made in connection to the thefts.

The 22-year-old male was arrested yesterday.

He is expected to be charged with dozens more offences in connection to the offending.
