An elderly woman is suing supermarket giant Aldi after she was injured during a “special buys” event in Victoria.

The 73-year-old claimed she suffered a fractured hip when she was struck by another customer’s shopping trolley in August last year.

The supermarket giant was holding a sale for TVs at its Corio store.

Aldi’s ‘special buys’ sales are known to draw large crowds desperate to score a bargain.

The elderly woman claims the company failed to control the crowd.

Arnold Thomas and Becker Lawyers principal Jodie Harris, who is representing the woman said the German supermarket had an obligation to provide adequate crowd management.

“I would describe it as Aldi creating somewhat of a frenzy associated with the purchase of items,” Harris said.

The woman has since had surgery to treat her hip and is now facing ongoing mobility issues.

“Unfortunately the other customers just stepped over her or walked around her in their attempt to get in,” Harris said.

“No one from the store came out to assist her she had to drag herself up.”

Aldi declined to comment.
